The UK Is “Rationing” Vegetables… & It’s All About Normalization – The past few days have seen certain fruits and vegetables “rationed” by major UK supermarkets.

Aldi, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have all put limits on customer purchases of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers.

Just yesterday, Lidl added their own name to that list.

Many – including Justin King, former Sainsbury’s CEO – have jumped at the chance to lay the blame at Brexit’s feet. – READ MORE

US Bankruptcy Filings Surge At Fastest Pace Since 2009 – For the past year, both the Biden White House and the Fed have been desperate to usher in a (mild) recession in the US to break the back of runaway inflation and the wage-price spiral with little success. But judging by the surge in bankruptcy filings, they are about to get their wish.

One month ago, when looking at the recent pace of large bankruptcy filings (those with more than $50MM in liabilities), we noted a troubling trend: in the first month of the year, the number of US bankruptcies topped 20, the highest in any other January dating back to 2010. Back then, 25 filings were seen as the economy was still reeling from the aftermath of the GFC. – READ MORE

U.S. Beef Cattle Has Lowest Inventory Since 1962 – The beef cattle inventory in the United States is at its lowest point since 1962, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The USDA’s biannual cattle report showed that, as of Jan. 1, 2023, there is a 89.3 million head inventory — which is three percent lower than the total from a year ago and the lowest since 2015. Of that number, 38.3 million cows and heifers have calved. – READ MORE

Techno-Hell: Big Banks Invest $45 Million in Global Carbon Credit Platform –Dovetailing with the World Economic Forum’s rollout of “personalized carbon trackers” that detail an individual’s eating and traveling habits and assign a corresponding “carbon credit score,” a slew of global banks have invested tens of millions of dollars in a carbon credit exchange platform. – READ MORE

Stainless Steal – The decay in quality reveals that the collapse of the neoliberal-hyper-financialization-hyper-globalization model has already occurred.

1) hyper-globalization, which pushes manufacturers to buy the cheapest components to lower costs. The failure of any one poorly made component renders the entire device useless junk which is dumped in the landfill.

2) Planned obsolescence as the corporate strategy to boost profits in an economy where everyone already has everything. By reducing the quality, product failure is accelerated, and the hapless consumer is forced to replace a device every few years that 30 years ago would have provided decades of trouble-free service. – READ MORE

The Department of Homeland Security Turns 20. Its Legacy Is Disastrous. – To those who don’t remember the events of September 11, 2001, it can be difficult to convey the sense of dread and uncertainty that followed. As horrible as the attacks were, many of us wondered: What’s next?

It was in this context that Congress quickly passed, and President George W. Bush signed, such legislation as the USA PATRIOT Act, less than two months after 9/11. While that law was drafted with the best of intentions—strengthening the nation’s defenses against potential future attacks—in practice, authorities overwhelmingly use it to circumvent Americans’ basic freedoms like privacy and due process. – READ MORE

Biden Administration ‘Worried’ 2008 Warrantless Wiretap Spy Law Will Lapse –The Biden administration is reportedly worried a 2008 spy law permitting warrantless wiretaps will not be renewed by Congress, as lawmakers on both the left and right have expressed privacy concerns.

With the law set to expire at the end of 2023, the administration “is so worried” about renewing the legislation that “it has begun the push to lobby for reauthorization 10 months before the law sunsets,” the Washington Post reported. – READ MORE

But during a Fox News interview on Tuesday, FBI Director Chris Wray acknowledged for the first time in public that the bureau had concluded that a lab leak in China was the most likely culprit for the origin of the pandemic that has killed six million people so far. – READ MORE
