“Water Water Everywhere…?” Really?
Hey Taverneers. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but then again, it’s been a while since I’ve had a free minute to collect my thoughts and write. But there’s been a creeping countrywide phenomenon that’s really sticking in my craw. I posted some of this over on the podcast forum, but felt it deserved a fuller treatment here. To wit, it’s been a fairly wet summer in NC, yet “they” have suggested water restrictions due to drought conditions. Everyone I know has drunk the Flavor-Ade and are freaking out over a drought, that I can see no sign of. We got 12 inches of rain last Saturday, with extensive flooding. My grass is ankle high 3 days after mowing, and everything that grows is green. Not a brown yard in sight anywhere. Creeks and rivers are up to the banks, but we have a drought…? Now, I just heard that our City commissioners have decided to wait until September to conclude discussions on allowing a DATA CENTER in town. Not trying to be paranoid here, but knowing that some of the said CENTERS can use the same amount of water as a 50,000 resident city, I wonder if this fake drought talk might be designed to condition us to water shortages ahead of time. I’ve heard that county/city council officials from other areas have received death threats because some DATA CENTER has drained the local water tables and now no one has water pressure beyond a trickle. I believe it was Debbie (?) who told of California authorities now metering privately owned wells so as to charge the owners for their own water. Of course all water is owned by the states, so water is being stolen (legally of course-wink wink). My Mexican Indian buddies used to say, “The next World War will not be fought over oil; it will be fought over water.” I think they might be on to something. Elon Musk (who I am not a fan of) has suggested placing the DATA CENTERS in space, because it’s cold in space, and no water would be needed to keep them cool. Sounds good, right? I guess so, as long as they can guarantee that they can keep them up there. Space junk is always falling to earth, most of it, thankfully, in remote areas. Imagine if a 20 acre DATA CENTER got out of orbit and plummeted to earth. Can we say “extinction event?” But I digress…. So I guess it’s have your water stolen or go out like T-Rex 🦖 did. Not much of a choice is it? My son in law is high up in IT for a company in Winston Salem. His assessment is that AI and subsequent DATA CENTERS are unstoppable at this point, and are here to stay. There’s too many billions and trillions of dollars, rubles, yuans, pesos, euros etc. behind them, and nations are frantically racing to out do all the other nations, especially when it comes to AI military applications. So moaning and complaining to local officials may not make much of a difference at this point. To his extreme chagrin, Pete Hegseth was reported to have been refused access to some company’s Military AI, because the developers were not sure that said AI was not already sentient. Can we say, “Skynet?” I’m no prophet, and I don’t have a crystal ball, but it takes neither to see we’re in for nasty weather. The good Doctor, Hunter S. Thompson perhaps, said it most eloquently,“Guaranteed Fear and Loathing. Abandon all hope. Prepare for the Weirdness. Get familiar with Cannibalism.” Keep your powder dry Brothers and Sisters and put away some extra beans and rice, maybe an extra jug of water too; there could come a day when we’re really going to need each other….
