It Can’t Happen Here Redux….

Recently I heard a person, whose education, experience and skill I respect, say (and I paraphrase, but I’m close) that for years we in the USA said ‘it can’t happen here’. Then in 2016 and the following four years we found that it indeed can happen hear, referring to Trump and his administration, and the “deplorables” uprising, thus robbing Hillary of her rightful reign.

Don’t get me wrong, I have some major problems with Trump and his administration, but generally when someone on one of these platforms or I say “it can’t happen here,” we’re referring to the communist takeover of this country by evil, corrupt, feckless power hungry and money hungry “haves.”

The person mentioned in the first paragraph and we say the same thing, but the meaning we attract to that which we say, is as different as apples and Toyotas. The ideological divide in this country is so wide a gulf, and there is no longer a forum for reasonable debate. I can see no scenario other than secession or war to solve the problem.

While a minister, marriage counseling was part of my duty. First, I would separate the husband and wife, and get each to tell me their side of the story. What amazed and bewildered me was how many times they both would describe an event, conversation, argument, or a fight, and it was like I was speaking to two people from different countries who had never met. Their descriptions of the exact event were so diametrically opposed to the other’s descriptions that I wasn’t sure they were referring to the same thing. No agreement whatsoever, and both were trying to convince m that their side was right. Sadly, when couples get to that place, there is little hope.

That’s where we are in this country. The time for reason may well be passed. Oh well, I guess it’s time to revise an old statement to: “if you can’t join em’, beat em’.”
