Big Bottle: Breaking Down The Baby Formula Nightmare – As anyone with an infant knows, there is a major crisis in the feeding of America’s babies right now, because parents in some areas can’t get baby formula. A few months ago, a major producer of formula – Abbott Labs – shut down its main production facilities in Sturgis, Michigan, which had been contaminated with the bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii, killing two babies and injuring two others. Abbott provides 43% of the baby formula in the United States, under the brand names Similac, Alimentum and EleCare, so removing this amount of supply from the market is the short-term cause of the problem. (Abbott and Mead Johnson produce 80% of the formula in the U.S., and if you add in Nestle, that gets to 98% of the market.) The problem is not, however, that there isn’t enough formula, so much as the consolidated distribution system creates a lot of shortages in specific states.

First, it’s hard to convey what a nightmare this situation is for parents, especially those whose children require special kinds of formula because of gastrointestinal issues or food allergies. “The shortage has led us to decide to put a feeding tube in our child,” said one parent, who simply could not get the specialized formula her daughter needs. – READ MORE


India, the world’s second-largest wheat producer, bans all wheat exports after record-breaking heatwave – India has banned all wheat exports following a widespread heatwave that affected the country’s supply of the crop.

A notice that was sent out in the government gazette by the directorate of foreign trade, on Friday, said the food security of India, its neighboring, and vulnerable countries was being threatened by the rise in global wheat prices. Congress Faces Backlash Over Plan To Give Peloton Memberships To Staffers – The House of Representatives faced backlash late this week over a plan to use taxpayer money to give staffers in Washington, D.C., and in district offices across the country, free Peloton memberships while the American people feel the pain of soaring inflation rates.

Fox Business reported that a draft email from the office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) said that the free memberships were a “premier employee benefit” and that all Capitol Police would also receive free memberships. – READ MORE


House Lawmakers Can Now Order Booze Deliveries Straight To Their Offices – Members of the House of Representatives may now order beer, wine, and spirits and have them delivered directly to their offices, a new development that could help lubricate those late-night budget negotiations. The perk is courtesy of Capitol Hill’s new caterer, hospitality services giant Sodexo, and was first reported by Fox News Channel’s Chad Pergram.

“Wine and beer was often available at catered receptions on Capitol Hill,” tweeted Pergram, known to Fox News viewers for his encyclopedic knowledge of Congress. “But now booze can go directly to a Member’s office.” – READ MORE


‘Assisted suicide’ program now taking those who are in financial straits – Police have begun an investigation into the “assisted suicide” of a 61-year-old Canadian woman after her daughters charged that she was not capable of providing her consent due to her mental health.

The Christian Institute in the United Kingdom said the woman, Donna Duncan, had sustained a concussion in a car accident in February 2020, and her physical and mental health declined. – READ MORE
