Talking about dumbed-down popular culture and its constants like music everywhere you go, and the formulaic authors who make up in quantity so much of what is read, is what makes the quiet and thoughtful new ideas – many times just putting one word in front of another in search of the story not yet told – so refreshing, pleasant and greatly appreciated when that new story is found. Imagine a great composer, Beethoven, tinkering on his piano until he finds a fraise, the seed from which a new symphony can grow. Many people find reading a book, any book, to be work as they have succumbed to the ease of turning on a tv, and herein lies the problem as they have been programmed to no longer to think for themselves, accepting what they are told without question – they are the walking dead, as David says “enslaved by entertainment” though they consider themselves learned and knowing. Good listening, now I’ll have to buy the book.

Agreed. I’m reading 2 books plus the Bible right now. Not many people read actual books anymore. Although I do read on my kindle when traveling, at home I like an actual book. Nothing like it. Reading is the best way to increase your intelligence and knowledge.

I’m with you, Paige! I love to read. A long commute to work has gotten me into audiobooks, and sometimes I’ll listen to the audiobook along with the physical book once I’m home, but it’s no substitute for turning the pages and just reading a physical book. Recently read some books on questioning and writing to organize thinking. For a fun change of pace I’m currently reading a book on the history of the Old-Fashioned cocktail. It’s great!

I think about people wanting life to happen to them vs. folks who go make life happen. Consuming bursts of entertainment on YouTube or TikTok vs going out and having adventures. Buying all the products or pills vs actually exercising, eating well, and getting strong, fit, and healthy. To me, reading is like this…it requires some effort but, man, the payoff is beautiful.
