I had to listen on repeat a million times just to let the words sink in. I still can’t get over the content of these lyrics. The “whole” picture looks so insane to me I need someone like you (& The PAINE.TV tribe) to bounce these ideas off of.

This IS a “long time ago.” Before anything we consider “contemporary” now. Look at the “cost of living index in 1976” & only landlines and telephone booths existed.

In 1976, The Corona Virus Pandemic, The Maui Fires, 9/11; Oklahoma City; Randy Weaver, Wako and Jonestown weren’t even a twinkle in our eye (Son of Sam started at the end of July).

I was 11 and my strongest impression of ‘76 is America’s Bicentennial Celebration and Operation Sail in NYC.

There was economic and political volatility but the overall mood of America seemed upbeat and positive. I think we all remember it to be a fairly nice time in America. 1976. At least for a kid it was.

From a record sales perspective, this BEGS the question: WHY on earth would THIS song be written? To be sung by Billy Joel and released on Turnstiles in May 1976?

Why would Joel risk public rejection with such an anti-NY, antisocial song? It goes against everything he stands for. But magically it disappeared under radar.

The total amount of cognitive dissonance I’m experiencing over this song is OFF THE HOOK.

At BEST, the song comes off like a celebration of the trashing of NYC. Categorizing Billy Joel as just another Atheist/Marxist/Commie Troubadour from Hollywood. Easy to reject off-hand as a chaos agent, just a spoiled artist that breaks things because of his entitlement and lack of appreciation.

At WORST it sounds like a glimpse into a DIABOLICAL & detailed, well laid-out plan set to fun music.

For MOST, like me, the song goes in one ear and out the other. Just a quirky, weird song relegated to obscurity. At least for the past 48 years.

I want to explore the Detailed Plan and End Times scenarios seemingly depicted in the song. This song may suddenly become relevant 50 years later. Who knows?

What is this song really talking about? Seriously. The end of the world? Actual events? Maybe. Or is it the harmless plot line to a fictional disaster movie? A fantasy? No. Let’s discuss.

My take: This song is about The Final Days, but from an Anti-Christ perspective.

From a K.I.S.S. perspective, major catastrophes, both man-made & “natural” are part of the Tribulation process of The End Times. In this global war raging between the forces of Good versus Evil, God’s Judgment exists as part of the preparation for the Second coming of Christ. Things MUST return to a virtuous state & the earth be pure and sacred once again. It’s the advent of a heavenly civilization of righteous people whom are guided and protected by God while the Heavens will do all the heavy lifting (beyond human capacity) around the world. i.e. God is leading/guiding us directly. I feel the need to get with the program.

I expect much testing, training and sifting from God.

Ultimate Freedom. What is it? It’s the absolute freedom given to us by God to choose between good & evil. In each and every waking moment of our lives.
