The Price of Eggs and Mexicans….
Hey there Taverneers! Sometimes when I get off message in a conversation, someone will inevitably say, “What’s that got to do with the price of eggs in China?” I have no idea how much eggs cost in China, and I think it an irrelevant come back. But that’s not my point. However the price of eggs are. I won’t go into the fact that eggs are high in price; to quote the venerable John Cleese, “Thank you for pointing out the bleeding obvious.” The main reason given for “the bleeding obvious” is the loss of chickens due to the Bird Flu or the Avian Flu. That’s always the excuse given. But hearing from farmers, I’m going to call BS. Why do I say this? While the price of eggs is climbing, the price of chicken meat has not risen proportionally. So if chickens are dying from the Bird Flu or having to be destroyed because of infection, are the only chickens dying the egg laying chickens and not the meat chickens? Does this flu discriminate between the two? Farmers who have free ranging chickens are not reporting higher incidences of Bird Flu. Do fresh air and sunlight make for healthier chickens as opposed to these giant chicken houses where zillions of chickens are crammed into cages in very close proximity to one another and never see the sun or breathe fresh air. If Bird Flu is the issue, it makes sense that it would be more rampant in houses where there’s thousands of chickens with little to no space between them. Another thing to consider is perhaps Bird Flu is the fowl equivalent of Covid, and we’re just being lied to by greedy price gougers, who have the wherewithal to buy eggs pro bono. Chicken farmers feel that rising egg prices without corresponding chicken meat prices, are caused by middleman and retail seller price gouging, and their (the farmers) opinions should count for something. So where do the Mexicans come into it? Well, in my neck of the woods we have a lot Baptists, and after the Holy Trinity, their next biggest passion is fried chicken. OK, I’m embellishing for my point’s sake, but we do have lots of chicken houses in my area, so consequently we have a fair number of chicken processing plants, where chickens are slaughtered, plucked, gutted, chopped into pieces and packaged for sale by retailers, restaurants, etc., by large numbers of workers. The majority of workers in these processing plants are almost all Mexicans…or, so I don’t appear xenophobic or racist, people who originally come from countries like Mexico, Central America, or South America, however, most of them in our area are Mexicans. There haven’t been huge layoffs of Latino workers, which wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect if there was a huge shortfall of chickens. So I’m inclined to agree with the farmers, the victims aren’t the chickens; it’s us! Only laying hens seem to be dying of the Bird Flu, and not meat chickens, which is pretty weird. Mexican chicken processors are still working and haven’t been laid off due to raw materials. Don’t know about you, but I’m smelling a rat. Price gouging seems to be killing off our grocery budgets, as opposed to diseased chickens. So what do we do? Back to “the bleeding obvious,” but the supposed answer to this problem would be to stop buying eggs at the store, or, just stop eating eggs. Easier said than done, right? But we could start seeking out and developing relationships with local farmers, especially those who raise chickens and sell eggs. We can shop at local mom ‘n pop produce and meat markets, who often sell eggs. Or we could start raising our own chickens and getting our own eggs, but that’s not feasible for lots of folks. What do y’all think? “Boot heels to be wandering” time, See y’all/ love y’all.
