The Honeymoon is Over….
Hey there, Well just when I was ready to brag to you how great the hospital services had been throughout this ordeal, the Medical Industrial Complex strikes again. Trish has had a rough night last couple of days. She is mostly confused. Her nurse doesn’t seem too concerned about that given the brain surgery, and her other health issues. I’m quite concerned at her swelling. She is badly swollen all over. I have never seen her arms and legs as big as they are today. I asked the nurse to have the doctors put in for a Heart Failure consult, since she has been a Heart Failure patient of the clinic of this hospital for a decade. The nurse said they may start some Lasix to get the fluid off, “may” being the operative word. From what they said it sounds as if she has gained close to 20 pounds since coming in a week ago. She looks more than twice her normal size. Her breathing is very labored as well. We’re putting pressure on them to do something, but the nurses’ hands are tied, and we never get to see the doctors, as they come all hours of the day and night. As the day progressed, there has been a lot of change and nothing demonstrative being done. I raised hell because for some inexplicable reason, the attending doctors just would not call in the Heart Failure doctors. Like I said, Trish’s gained 20 pounds in a week, and no one seems to be concerned??? Like that’s normal for a person who isn’t eating more than a child’s portion of food only a couple of times per day. I finally used the “malpractice” word, and threatened to go the top executive if I had to, to get her the help she needs. It’s ridiculous that we should be charged the amount of money that we are, and we have to do the bloody doctor’s job for them. It’s a good thing I’ve not run into the attending physician otherwise I’d be starting a Go Fund Me Page to bail me out of jail, and there’d be sad singing and coffee drinking over some no account doctor’s dead ass. Other than that, “Happy Happy Joy Joy!” “Aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?” The twenty pounds she gained this week is, without a doubt, from fluid–what her Heart Failure doctors deal with. Until a few minutes ago the doctors attending her have refused our request to have Cardiology get involved with her care. Her hospital docs are not Cardiologists. I threatened them with hell to pay retribution if anything happened to Trish as a result of their negligence, and it finally got their attention. Trish looks frightful. She “looks” like she weighs 400 lbs–all from fluid because they withheld her fluid medicine because they know nothing about Cardiology (normally she weighs less than 160). Cardiology has finally stepped in, and is actively removing fluid from her, while monitoring her kidneys etc. That is a good thing. But the struggle was intense to get her the care she needed was intense. I’m sure as a result, I’ve been removed from several peoples’ Christmas lists for my lack of tact and diplomacy. I’m reminded of Robert Earl Keen’s song, “I Only Use My Gun Whenever Kindness Fails,” but I digress. Bottom line, no fever, fluid is coming off, and there’s still some confusion. As I was writing this, Physical Therapy came by, and waking Trish from a nap, found her unresponsive. She was OK before she went to sleep. Her blood pressure is very low—double digits over double digits. They are rushing her for another CT scan of her head, then possibly back to ICU. Gotta go. More when I know it! Thanks, and much love!
