Somewhat brighter news….
Hey, I just finished a new knife for a Paine.TV member. If you’d like to see it, go out to my dana.acker profile page, below the photo in that tool bar underneath; all the way to the right are 3 dots in a row. Click on the dots, then click on “my photos.” The two photos on the top left are two views of the new one I just finished for said Paine.TV member, along with a Kydex sheath and belt mounting hardware. At the bottom of the photo page you can load more photos. Those photos are a random sampling of my work going back into the 90’s. Oh yeah, please do it from my page, not The Green Dragon Tavern page—different photos. If anybody is interested in getting a knife made, please e-mail me at: ackerforge@yahoo.com as I do not feel comfortable doing business on Mike’s site, since I have not discussed it with him. I’ll send you my pricing guidelines, and we can go from there. Do note a couple of things; if you want a knife, and must have it before Christmas, I’ll be accepting Christmas orders until the end of July. After that I cannot guarantee delivery by Christmas. The second thing is “sticker shock.” Several folks here have inquired about a knife, received my pricing guidelines, and I’ve never heard from them again. I’m making no judgments here, but I do need to say a couple of things by way of informing you as to why my prices are what they are. The knife in the two new photos (one knife-2 views) I’ve got over a week’s worth of time and labor in. I’m making these knives with a hammer, fire, a couple of power tools, and several hand tools, but it’s all by hand—none are machine made. I may use a drill press to drill the handle pin holes, and a belt grinder to smooth out the cutting edges, but it’s my hands guiding each piece. I live on a fixed income, and have medical bills out the wazoo. I cannot spend two weeks worth of time making a knife and then sell it for a hundred bucks. That’s less money than I’d make asking people if they’d like a buggy at WalMart. Ask yourself, what would you expect to be paid for a week’s work? Honest, I’m not trying to get rich or gouge anybody. The last job I had, I made $22.50 per hour. Even though my prices are higher than many commercially made knives, I’m still making a lot less than $22.50 per hour when it’s all said and done. And, for a one of a kind, hand made, functional and effective tool or weapon that you can leave to your grandchildren, compared to the prices others charge in the custom knife industry for their knives, I believe my prices to be reasonable. There are custom makers charging twice to three times my highest price. I’m willing to work with people, and will try to negotiate the best knife for the best price, and, I’ll take all circumstances into consideration. Yes, you can purchase commercial, factory made knives by reputable manufacturers like, Buck, Gerber, SOG, and Cold Steel to name a couple of companies, for much less money, and get a decent, near cosmetically perfect, serviceable blade. But understand, to get their quite lesser price point, they are mass producing their products by the thousands, on computer driven machines, with little to no hand work, and often in other countries. I understand if the “sticker shock” is…well, shocking. Guidelines are just that; they were not given to me carved in stone atop Mt. Sinai. If you want a knife from me, talk to me; like I said, I’ll do my best to work with you. My last name isn’t Scrooge.
