Mining Some Rare Nuggets….
Hey Taverneers, if you like the stories behind the music, let me recommend Otis Gibbs. Otis is a folk singer and guitarist, for lack of better terms. But let me also recommend his YouTube channel, simply called Otis Gibbs. He’s kind of like the guy you’d like to have for a next door neighbor; just a decent person. But all that aside, Otis is friends with some of the best people playing music today and back in the day. He doesn’t have the big stars on his show, but folks who were the backing musicians, band mates, road managers and roadies for the big stars. He allows them to tell some of their best stories. What’s amazing is that almost every person interviewed stays away from the dirt, and recalls with fondness the stars with whom they worked. Most of the stories will inspire a respect and admiration for some very enigmatic musicians. I’ve learned a lot from his interviews and Otis’ tales as well. He recommends books very well worth reading. Some interviews stretch upwards of an hour, and some are under 15 minutes. The story of Brian Wilson and John Lennon, I heard from Otis. He adds color to many pictures that heretofore were only black and white. Once again, pay a visit to his channel. https://www.youtube.com/@otisgibbs/videos He’s got a treasure trove of videos, from John Lennon to George Jones; Merle Haggard to Frank Zappa, Willie Nelson to the Grateful Dead, and on it goes. You may not know the person being interviewed, but you will know the star they are discussing. And, if you’re feeling industrious, try looking up the person being interviewed, and you might discover some music you never knew you were missing. Once again, time “…for my boot heels to be wanderin’….” (Bob Dylan) Love y’all
