Hospital Blues….
Trish, my wife entered the hospital with 3 life threatening conditions going on simultaneously. She was poisoned almost to death by ammonia (normally filtered out by the liver) that had backed up into her blood stream. It was like she drank four bottles of Windex. Trish also had Sepsis, which began during her previous stay in the hospital in early February. So from the time she left the hospital after her February visit until this visit (approx 10 days between) bacteria from her gut had been leaking into her bloodstream and multiplying rapidly. The cause of the Sepsis is suspect, but nothing that can or cannot be proved or disproved, so it’s a moot point. It just happened. Also prior to entry into the hospital, her congestive heart failure kicked in, and Trish gained about 10 lbs of fluid weight in less than two days. She was swollen to the point we thought they would have to cut her clothing off of her. The staff and doctors feared her feet might literally burst. While being treated for all that, the diuretics they used to remove over 20 lbs of fluid off of her, nearly wrecked her kidneys. We pleaded to the point of threatening in order to have a Hepatologist (liver specialist) consult on her case, since the liver was not flushing out the toxins like a normal liver should—almost to the point of killing her. The other doctor groups finally relented, stopped their pissing contest, and acquiesced to allowing a Hepatologist to see her. There are four known causes of ammonia leaking from the liver into the blood; Trish has none of them, so now there will be a number of scans and tests to try to discover the cause, but at least someone whose specialty is livers will be overseeing that aspect of her case. On top of it all, one morning someone entered Trish’s room with a gurney and told her they were taking her to surgery. Trish argued vehemently with the lady until she went and checked, and oops! Wrong room. It’s been a ride, Brothers and Sisters; it’s been a ride. God forbid, but if any family member of yours has to be admitted to the hospital, you need to go and be an advocate for them, prepared to raise holy hell until they do right. Patients are sick, weak, often confused, medicated, and vulnerable; they need an objective set of eyes and ears watching and questioning everything that’s being done. The hospital will not provide one, so be prepared to step up. We acknowledge, felt, and witnessed the prayers of so many bring Trish through this. We are humbled and we are grateful to you all without measure. Now I’ve got to stop. It wouldn’t be fitting for the proprietor of the drinking establishment that wants to overthrow the Crown to get all misty eyed. Love y’all.😉
