Hey there! Sorry to be off duty, but my wife has again been in the hospital for almost a month battling several life threatening issues. Things are going better, but it’s been a long, uphill climb. As the days go by, I’ll be sharing some thoughts on being up close and personal with big medicine for an extended period of time. Today the hospital where Trish is, lifted their mask mandate. Small victories. We’ll talk soon! Love y’all! I don’t say that enough….

When Trish was admitted through the hospital ER, she was unconscious and quite confused from all the toxins in her blood (more on this later), they tagged her with all kinds of plastic wrist bracelets; “Fall Risk,” ones with scannable barcodes, etc. Her second day in, our granddaughter (who watches true medical programs) asked if we knew she had a purple bracelet? Purple, she informed us, meant “DO NOT RESUSCITATE.” Trish never gave that declaration, and if she had, she did in a state of somewhere between extreme confusion and semi-consciousness, where she was not fully responsible. Neither her immediate family nor I gave permission for such. But had her heart stopped, it was explained to us, even CPR would not be administered. No one from the hospital side took accountability for placing it on her, and there exists no paperwork granting the authority to place it on her. We raised hell, and had the charge nurse officially cut it off of her. Moral of the story: be ever vigilant of your loved ones in the hospital. Never take anything for granted. Had her heart stopped and we hadn’t noticed one of many bracelets, I’d be accepting your condolences, rather than raising your awareness.

Someone in authority (wink wink nod nod) at the hospital told me that said hospital had fired many nurses for refusing to take the Covid vaccines. Short of critical help, the corporate hospital owners “bought” some nurses from another country as replacements. Not having done their homework, they failed to find out until they got the nurses here, that said nurses from that country neither learned how to dispense, nor had any experience in dispensing medicine. In their country, all injections, IV’s, and pills were administered to patients by doctors only. Nurses there are the equivalent of nursing assistants here. So all the new nurses had to be sent to school to learn nursing level pharmacology.

On the lighter side, I asked a physician if he had taken the Covid vaccine, and he replied, “No, I prefer to die of natural causes.”😉

Traveling nurses are making a small fortune these days. Always did pay well, but through the roof now.

I heard that a lot over the last few weeks. Hospitals that under pay and under appreciate nurses are losing them to the traveling nurse market. It’s not good for patients, but too many nurses have been paid miserly and have had to take a lot of crap along with that. They deserve whatever life and career advancement they can find. More power to them.

That said, the nurses attending Trish over the last several weeks, have been absolute angels of mercy, and consummate professionals. Doctors get all the glory, but nurses are the ones who stand in the gap for the patients. Nurses are all about wellness, and doctors are largely about cures.

Prayers for you and your wife, I’m also sitting in a hospital now with my momma .I was so happy when I heard the news this morning that many of our regional hospital had dropped the mask requirement and had made it optional. Now if they would drop the jab requirement maybe some of us seasoned nurses would come back to work

Bless you for your kind words, and also for your faithfulness to your Mom in the hospital. I know that is not easy. Prayers for you and your Mom.

Prayers going out for Trish. Good eye by your crew on purple band. A few decades ago you could fill out a DNR and they would pay no heed to it. You now have a lot of leverage over them and they know it too.

That’s crazy about the hospital trying to DNR her w/out you making that decision. Scary that they’ve become this assembly line for death (no offense, I’m glad your wife’s improving, regardless!). You need to keep watch on them & you’re in the right place—-by her side. You’re good people, Dana! God Bless & we’ll be here anxious to hear your journey.

Hi Dana. This is your other Acker. So so very sorry to hear about Trish. There are no words to tell you how much you are respected and cared about in this community. Even Mike mentions you on the show. All we can do is take it one day at a time. Thinking and praying for you both

    Plk

Sending prayers your way that your wife will be well and be discharged. Thank God for your grand daughter knowing about that purple wrist band. Who would have guessed?
