The character in “The Patriot,” was modeled after Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton, a British officer who was known for excessive brutality. After the American defeat at the Battle of Waxhaw, or the “Waxhaw Massacre” in South Carolina, Tarleton summarily executed any surrendering American fighters.
