There are fewer cattle in Texas than at any point since 1961, according to an analysis by an Amarillo industry association using data released by the USDA earlier this year.
Matt Garner, executive director of The Range, said ongoing drought conditions and rising costs have contributed to the decline.
The USDA data was compiled before this year’s devastating Panhandle wildfires, which killed more than 7,000 cattle. Still, it showed that the state’s beef cow population fell 4%between 2023 and 2024.
