Homeland Security Secretary Promises American Won’t Be Monitored By Disinformation Governance Board

The recently announced “Disinformation Governance Board” that will be part of the Department of Homeland Security has caused a wave of backlash as the board appeared to be created around the same time SpaceX CEO Elon Musk moved to buy Twitter for $44 billion. At the same time, other critics used the announcement to suggest that the board will be able to monitor Americans, gaining even more control over citizens. While the decision continues to be debated, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was adamant that the board will not monitor American citizens.
Discussing the goal of the board with CNN, Mayorkas was asked, “It’s still not clear to me how this governance board will act and what it will do.”
The Secretary answered, “So what it does is it works to ensure that the way in which we address threats, the connectivity between threats and acts of violence, are addressed without infringing on free speech, protecting civil rights and civil liberties, the right of privacy.” He added, “What it will do is gather together best practices in addressing the threat of disinformation from foreign state adversaries from the cartels and disseminate those best practices to the operators that have been executing in addressing this threat for years.” – READ MORE
